In a decisive move to address the worsening smog crisis in Punjab, the Lahore High Court (LHC) has issued a series of directives. The court has mandated the closure of all government and private educational institutions on Saturdays and Sundays in smog-affected areas. Additionally, a work-from-home policy for two days a week has been imposed on both public and private offices in Lahore division, Sheikhupura, Khanewal, and Bahawalnagar.
Expressing dissatisfaction over the failure to control smog, the LHC has ordered the replacement of the Director General of Environment. Furthermore, Deputy Commissioners in Jhang, Hafiz Abad, Khanewal, Nankana Sahib, Bahawalnagar, and Sheikhupura are to be transferred, as directed by Justice Shahid Karim.

Highlighting vehicles as a major contributor to smog, the LHC has urged the promotion of cycling and instructed the Punjab government to purchase electric motorcycles for its staff. Criticizing the government, the court has questioned the wisdom of initiating development projects amidst the suffocating smog.
In a bid to enforce accountability, the Chief Secretary Punjab has been directed to promptly issue notifications regarding the transfer of officials. This comprehensive approach by the Lahore High Court reflects a commitment to combating the smog crisis and its detrimental impact on the health and well-being of the residents in the affected areas.
