In response to the escalating smog crisis in Punjab, the Lahore High Court (LHC) has taken decisive measures, directing the closure of all educational institutions, including schools and colleges, every Saturday. This directive, issued during a hearing on the province’s suffocating smog levels, emphasizes the severity of the situation, with Justice Shahid Kareem noting that the smog has now spread across all of Punjab, surpassing its initial concentration in Lahore.
The LHC has also mandated a work-from-home policy twice a week for both government and private institutions to curb the adverse effects of the smog. Justice Karim emphasized the need for a complete shutdown of schools and colleges on Saturdays.
Despite recent rainfall, the air quality in Punjab has not significantly improved, prompting the court to take urgent action. The hearing of the case has been adjourned until November 17, reflecting the ongoing nature of the crisis. These stringent measures highlight the court’s recognition of the gravity of the smog situation, aiming to protect the health and well-being of the public by addressing the persistent air quality issues in the region.
